Srimad-Bhagavatam: The Sword That Reveals the Truth

Bhagavatam has no duplicity or hypocrisy. It always reveals what is absolutely real. It never hides the truth. If you speak honestly, people will become angry. Is this true or not? This is a fact. When you speak honestly, people become very angry. But other Puranas’ katha is called madhu-pushpita-vakyam, understand or not?

Madhu-pushpita-vakyam means the type of katha that is a little sweet, but completely useless, only meant to attract people. Just give an example of plastic flowers. They look nice or not? Yes. First you put perfume, then a very nice fragrance comes. These are artificial flowers — very attractive, but artificial, not real.

In the same way, other Puranas’ katha are called madhu-pushpita-vakyam, only to attract people. Many kathas are there — karma-katha, jnana-katha, yoga-katha, and tapasya-katha. People like to hear about these subjects, so for this reason other Puranas speak about them. But Srimad-Bhagavatam directly cuts this katha. Dharma, karma, artha, moksha — this is not our ultimate goal. Our ultimate goal is krishna-prema.

(Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.21)

[Thus the knot in the heart is pierced, and all misgivings are cut to pieces. The chain of fruitive actions is terminated when one sees the self as master.]

Srimad-Bhagavatam is a direct operation on your heart — a heart operation. There are two ways to operate on the heart. One is called direct, another is called bypass surgery. Nowadays modern science puts one kind of camera inside you and operates. Another way is to directly open your chest. Heart surgery. Which do you want?

You want bypass surgery. But Srimad-Bhagavatam directly cuts your chest to open your heart. Understand. When there is a direct operation, maybe you will live or maybe you will die. So you are afraid and saying, “No, no! I want bypass surgery.” But this scripture is direct — meaning direct instruction. Saying, “Hey, stop this nonsense. Give up this nonsense.” It is not speaking any madhu-pushpita-vakyam. No hypocrisy, no duplicity. Direct. Saying, “Chant holy names!”

Is this good or not? Direct. All this katha is direct. Give up all bad things, all nonsense. Give up your boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, children, everything — cats, dogs, animals. Give up all your attachments and chant holy names:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama

Rama Rama Hare Hare

So everything is given directly, not indirectly. For this reason many people are afraid to read Srimad-Bhagavatam, afraid to listen to Srimad Bhagavat-katha, because it is a direct operation.

If there are many knots on one rope, how will you open them? Take one knife and cut. Or another way, you can slowly open them one by one, taking much time. But this scripture is direct. So it is saying:

bhidyate hṛdaya-granthiśchidyante sarva-saṁśayāḥ

Take one sword and cut. What would you prefer? Take one sword and cut — do or die. So for this reason, for Srimad-Bhagavatam katha fewer people are coming, fewer people want to hear. Other kathas, Purana different kathas — Shiva Purana, Kalika Purana, Devi Purana — many Puranas’ katha thousands of people listen to. But during Srimad-Bhagavatam katha fewer people listen. Why? Because it is like a direct sword. “Hey, come! Chant holy names!” Is it saying this or not?

Srimad-Bhagavatam is the perfect doctor. Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada gives an example of two kinds of doctors. One kind gives perfect medicine and performs the operation. Another doctor only blows on the skin. He gives a little medicine and some temporary relief. This is also true — temporarily you get some relief. But inside there is all the pus that creates gangrene. Gangrene, understand?

If you go to a perfect doctor, he will say, “This boil has pus inside, we must cut and operate.” Then you feel so much pain. Then you abuse the doctor and use harsh words: “Oh, stupid doctor, I am feeling pain!” With your hands and legs you beat the doctor. But by force the doctor cuts, takes out all the pus and blood, cleans everything, and puts medicine. After six or seven days you are clean, and you come to the doctor and say, “Oh my God. That day I used many harsh words to you, but you are my best friend.”

Which doctor do you prefer? The perfect doctor. That doctor who only blows on you — do not go to this doctor. Go to the doctor who can properly operate and remove all the pus and blood.

In the same way, Srimad-Bhagavatam directly explains all this tattva karma, jnana, yoga, tapasya. By performing these things you will not attain the abode of the Lord. Temporarily you may get some relief, some enjoyment. Understand? If you have a boil and you blow on it, some cool air comes and for one second or five seconds you feel relief. But inside there is still gangrene. So what will you do? Go to the perfect doctor.

So this scripture explains all these things clearly. It is saying to give up karma, jnana, yoga, tapasya. Only practice shuddha-bhakti.
